Rustic Weddings - Something Blue Bridal Boutique - Holly Michigan

by Dayna

For all of the rustic/barn wedding lovers out there, the fall season could not be more perfect for your wedding style.  Fall brings all the beauty and less heat than a summer wedding, allowing, you, the bride, to enjoy the outdoors without melting in your dress. The natural colors of the changing leaves will bring in breathtaking beauty that can be reflected in your centerpieces with perhaps a wreath or a bouquet of wildflowers.  Many other popular decorations involve the use of vines, acorns, pinecones, leaves (of course!), pumpkins, and gourds.
For the couple that wants to bring in some warm familiarities of the fall season and the memories of picking apples they can serve hot cider, hot chocolate, donuts, or candied apples. Just remember brides, allow your wedding to reflect your personality and have fun with it!  There are many sophisticated and fun ways to decorate your big day without it looking like a part of Thanksgiving Day.
Some inspiring sites with great ideas that I have found are: greenweddingshoes.comstylemepretty.com, and marthastewartweddings.com.

One Dress, Two Styles

For some brides, one dress is simply not enough for their wedding day.  With so many options out there, short, long, high-low, poofy, glam, etc. you might find two that fit perfect you; one for the ceremony, the other for the reception.  Oftentimes tradition comes into play for the ceremony and the reception is where your personality can shine through, making you want to change it up and perhaps be more comfortable.  Designers have been thinking about brides like you who want options and more than one dress option at an affordable price.  Here, in our store, we have a dress by Alfred Angelo that provides the length for the traditional wedding ceremony and a little fun at the reception for later without you having to change entirely or even buy a second dress altogether.  This dress is two pieces, take off the skirt piece and wa-la, you now have a short, knee length dress perfect for still looking fabulous, able to dance till you drop, no bustle needed, and no friends to help hold up your dress while you use the restroom!  And it oftentimes looks like an entirely dress giving you a fresh new look during your wedding!

Something Blue . . .

The famous saying goes a little like this:
Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe
But what does all of this mean and why do brides do it?
Collectively throughout a variety of resources, wikipedia’s, Wedding Bee, The Knot, The Feminist Bride,  Weddingguideuk.com,  and Martha Stewart, all agree on the first two lines, many provide different historical origins for the last line, however all agree on the meaning.
Something Old refers to the continuity with the bride’s family and the past.
Something New refers to the optimism for the future.
Something Borrowed symbolizes happiness or borrowed happiness from a happily married friend or family member.  It is believed that by borrowing the object from a happily married couple that it will carry over into the new bride’s life.
Something blue represents purity, love, and fidelity.  According to MarthaStewart.com the color blue has historically been worn by the Romans to symbolize modesty, love, and fidelity.  In the Biblical sense, the color blue has also represented purity with the Virgin Mary always in blue.  Throughout the ages, with the color blue has represented love, purity, and fidelity, brides used to be wed in blue until the late 19th century.
A silver sixpence is believed to bring good fortune and prosperity to the new couple, not only financially but also in joy and happiness.  The history on this tradition is a little hazier.  Some sites say that it is a British custom, while others say it is Scottish and originated as the groom’s tradition.  How it ended up as a bride carrying on the tradition, who knows?
Now that you know the history on the saying, you are probably wondering when did this saying even pop up?  That is generally unknown, but believed to have been commonly recited in the Victorian Era.  Martha Stewart’s site also brings up an interesting point which indicates to the time period of the saying.  The sixpence was only minted from 1551-1967 which means the saying likely started (at least the tail part of the saying) sometime in 1551 or later.
So what can you do to bring this rhyme’s good fortune into your life?
Old: Finding a vintage piece of jewelry from a grandparent or possibly an old family owned handkerchief wrapped around the bride’s flowers.
New:  Some women consider their wedding gown as their “new” item.  It could be a new pair of shoes, piece of jewelry or hair clip, or perhaps a “new” “blue” garter (that’s a two for one ladies! J).  For many brides they are wearing several new items and that is an easy one to accomplish.
Something Borrowed: This item must be given back after the wedding, but perhaps the wedding gown itself, or something else with meaning between the bride and the family member or friend.
Something Blue: The bride could wrap a blue ribbon around her flowers, wear blue lingerie, paint her nails or toe nails blue, have a blue flower in her bouquet, sew blue into the dress on the inside, or I have seen “I DO” bling to go on the back underneath the shoes on the soles in blue.
A sixpence has been replaced with a dime, a penny, or you can purchase sentimental sixpence special for weddings.
Any other fun suggestions?  Let us know!

Alfred Angelo Trunk Show

It’s been a little bit since the last post…but with our upcoming trunk show, it got me thinking....how did trunk shows come about?  In general, it’s not as easy to find as I hoped.  But, with my quick bit of research, I found out, which makes total sense to me, that according to both dinnertopics.com and willowsonwillows.blogspot.com that trunk shows came about from travelling salesmen selling their inventory out of a trunk.  This would make sense given that trunks were what people used to use as luggage a hundred plus years ago.
Now –a-days the name has stuck, but it’s not all of someone’s inventory, or even in a trunk at all at trunk shows.  Today trunk shows are used for a couple of reasons.   In general, a trunk show is a great way for a designer to see how receptive their target market it to the upcoming seasons designs.  If they find that a particular garment is not selling well, they won’t need to mass produce it.  On the retail end of things, it is a great way for a retailer to find out what is selling well and what to order and keep in stock.   Particularly in the bridal industry it is nice because many times the boutique cannot get the entire season’s inventory in the store, so this helps to bring in gowns that are not usually found in the store, which is also fun for the bride too.  In general, a trunk show is a fun to see what is selling and needs to be produced or ordered depending on which branch you are in in the wide and fun world of fashion!
Hopefully we will see you at our Alfred Angelo Trunk Show June 22-24 having as much fun as we are planning to have with it!

Destination Gowns

During these warm summer months people are always thinking about their vacation getaways.  And some couples are thinking about these vacation-getaways as a time to get to married too.  It’s a nice way to mix in something special with a trip that was already bound to be memorable.

If a beach paradise is where your dream wedding is or maybe an “Up North” nature feel is more of your style, then fear not!  We have dresses here in the store for you!  There are the traditional “destination” wedding dresses that are short, as well as the dresses that are light and airy. But keep in mind brides, that if you want the destination wedding, but not typical “destination” dress, that can be arranged.  Just because you want the destination doesn’t mean you have to stick to the confines of the stereotypical dresses.  Remember that as long as you feel great in the dress you want in the location you want, you will shine all the more brightly on this important and special day!

Something Blue Bridal of Holly wins award fit for a princess

The award-winning bridal boutique showcases Alfred Angelo’s Disney Fairy Tale Weddings and Modern Vintage bridal gowns.Something Blue Bridal Boutique was recently awarded 2012 WeddingWire Bride’s Choice Award for best Dress and Attire.

WeddingWire.com is a website for all things bridal-related, made up of 200,000 wedding professionals found throughout the United States and Canada. Something Blue Bridal Boutique was recognized among the top five percent of those wedding professionals. The awards are given to those who continually give great service, quality and responsiveness within the wedding industry. Something Blue Bridal Boutique stood out and won because of phenomenal reviews by recent newlywed clients.

Nicole Kalil, owner of Something Blue, said, “We’d gotten quite a few good reviews. They like our service and attention to detail. There were only a handful of businesses in Michigan that were selected.”

Kalil opened the business two years ago and said that it is quite an honor to receive the award, especially for being a relatively new business. “That makes me feel good, like I’m doing something right,” said Kalil.

The exclusivity of Alfred Angelo’s Disney Fairy Tale Weddings has been drawing in brides-to-be from miles around who are enchanted with the idea of their own princess wedding. The collection has also piqued brides-to-be interest as they search for a way to capture the nostalgic beauty on their wedding day.

“All brides want to feel and look like a princess on their special day and I’m delighted to offer such a collection at our boutique,” said Kalil, owner of Something Blue Bridal Boutique. “Many people think that in order to look like a princess that it will be costly, but the Disney inspired dresses are moderately priced and available for order for women of all shapes and sizes.”

She originally opened the shop as a consignment store and quickly saw the need to adapt to a retail boutique.

“I wanted to give girls that small (boutique) intimate experience. I like scheduling the appointments, then they have my undivided attention,” said Kalil. This allows her to focus her attention on the bride and what she desires.
“The prices really seems to resonate with brides. Gowns range in price from $599 to $1749 for wedding gowns and bridesmaids gowns are priced under $200,” said Kalil.

Something Blue has gowns for women of all shapes and sizes.

“The floor samples usually come in, in sizes 6-12,” Kalil said. “The average women’s size is 14, so I’ve been trying to get as many samples as I can that are sizes 14, 16 and up.

Meet Dayna, Something Blue Summer Intern!

I can't believe it's almost been a month since Dayna has started interning for Something Blue! I say it's high time we introduce her to you!

Greetings!

For those who have recently visited Something Blue you may have already seen me around.  For those who haven’t, let me introduce myself: Hi! My name is Dayna and I am here as intern for Nicole for the summer.  I have been studying at Eastern Michigan University in the Apparel, Textiles, and Merchandising program.  I am very excited to be a part of Something Blue and learn from Nicole, a WeddingWire award winner for Best Dress and Attire of 2012.

So far, I have to say, I love working here with Nicole, meeting all the brides, and helping them find the dress for their special day.  Each week, I will do my best to write a post and I always change up the window displays, among many other things.  Hopefully you will continue to check out our posts or maybe stop in!

"Plus-Size"

Plus size, fuller figured, curvy . . . fashion designers can call it what they will . . . but the fact remains that the average size for American women is size 14 and up.

At Something Blue Bridal Boutique we have curated a nice selection of bridal gowns sizes 14 and up and I just wanted to quickly show that even though we will continue to order larger samples that we can still accommodate a range of sizes.

The gown below is a gorgeous blush toned Forever Yours bridal gown in a size 18. I threw it on the size 6 dress form to show that it can be clamped down and fit a size 6 dress form.

Same dress . . .

Editorial | Something Blue Bridal Boutique, Holly Michigan

WeddingWire asked us to share our top three pieces of advice to brides who are gown shopping.

What do we wish brides knew before stepping foot in your salon & what pieces of information do I feel like I'm sharing with brides over & over again?

. . . HERE'S WHAT I HAD TO SHARE . . .

1} Be VERY open to styles outside of your comfort zone. All too often I hear "I DO NOT want lace" -or- "NO big princess gowns for me!" . . . But I always try to advise that we wait to judge the fabric or cut until it's on your actual body. Sometimes it's more about how a gown feels once it's on as opposed to what makes up the gown. If you feel sexy & ready to walk down the aisle, then a style that once made you apprehensive may be just the ticket!

2} Listen to YOUR gut. It can be very overwhelming hearing what your entourage thinks about every little detail of each gown you try on. What one friend might dislike about a gown might be the one thing you really love! Often I see brides start to doubt their selection. I never want a bride slipping into her gown on her wedding day and still thinking about another gown that was really for her.

3} Don't put your gown at the bottom of your budget. I hear a lot . . . "We've already paid for the venue & catering & we're running out of budget . . . besides, I'm only wearing it for a couple hours!" While it is a few hours that can go by very quickly, your venue & food are also fleeting. All eyes will be on the happy couple & your gown all evening . . . and don't forget that your wedding photos will last a lifetime! Make sure you're in "the gown" that you'll love looking back on time & time again!

What's some advice you've learned along the way?

Please share by commenting below & we will share on Facebook!

-Nicole
